Thank you to Dan Vetters for speaking with our aerospace engineering class this morning about career options in the field and his passion for engineering. He's worked with Cummins, Rolls Royce, and over the past five years has been with Blue Origin, Amazon's rocket division. Dan designed and developed valves that manage pressure in the first stage boosters for Blue Origin's Glenn rocket that launched in January. He now leads the fluids team on an upper stage portion for the next Glenn rocket. In talking about some of his designs and issues that have been solved on these rockets, he emphasized how much teamwork it takes, and the importance of various roles and professions in building and launching rockets.
Dan has over one hundred patents, and shared that one of his favorite things is that he is constantly learning. "You take an idea over here and another one over here and put them together, but you have to learn and understand the principles and concepts to put them together to make something new."
Students also got to share with him what they have been doing in their #pltworg engineering courses.
When Damilola Adesanya moved to Indiana, she knew she wanted to go back to school. She had been attending college in Nigeria, but she wasn't able to transfer her credits from home. A friend recommended Christel House DORS, the adult high school. "I didn't want to go back to high school," she admits, "but let's give it a try." Today she's a nurse - and continuing her education.
Damilola started at DORS in 2018. “My goal was to go to college and have a career,” she says. She focused her efforts, taking dual-credit classes such as math and English through Ivy Tech Community College. Graduating DORS in 2019, Christel House offered Damilola support, providing help with college tuition. “I’ve always wanted to be in a medical field,” she says. Nursing was the best choice. She graduated in December 2021 from Ivy Tech with a nursing degree and was recruited to work at Eskenazi Health. Enrolling at IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis) Damilola is continuing her studies with a goal of working in critical care. She is considering what she wants to do. “I have options – should I get my masters and become a nurse practitioner or go back to medical school?” She pauses and thinks about her choices and smiles. “I don’t want to stop learning.”
